Today’s post is going to be about something relatively new to me – the Derma Roller System Kit. I’ve seen the derma rollers in the past and once bought one myself but my experience with it was not pleasant to say the least. The roller broke after a week’s use and the needles were so thick that it actually hurt my face a lot. This was the time when I’ve decided that dermarolling was not for me and I focused more on other skincare items in my wardrobe. Looking back I can only say that I made a bad purchase then trying to find a cheap roller and expecting it will do all the wonders.
When I’ve got contacted by the Derma Roller System company asking whether I am interested in trying out their derma roller I was very hesitant at first but then I’ve decided to give it a go. Why? Well I was still curious at what makes people rave about dermarolling so much. I did my little research on the topic and said yes to the PR sample kit and was patiently waiting for it to arrive. To my surprise the parcel got to me in one week’s time which is very fast considering the fact that the company is located in Canada. I was asked which derma roller I was interested in and considering the fact that I wanted to test it out on my face where my skin is so thin I was advised to go for the 0,5 mm roller. I am super happy I did choose the smallest size to begin with.
What I’ve got was the Derma Roller System® with Collagen Cream. It is a kit containing 4 items:
- Derma Roller with User Guide
- Compact Travel Case
- PureDerm® Collagen Face Mask
- DermaCell® Collagen Cream
A little background information
The derma roller which is also known as a or microneedling device is a small hand-held tool that consists of hundreds of fine needles placed in circles that penetrate the skin causing micro-lesions. Dermarolling treatments are frequently associated with being a medical treatment for your skin as this procedure is pushing your skin to restore the micro-lesions by producing new collagen and elastin in the process of healing. By continuously triggering the body’s natural healing process, skin is stimulated to continuously produce the collagen and elastin which are so vital for remodeling the skin from within making it more firm and vital in a long run. When the dermarolling is used in combination with special nourishing creams containing ceramides, collagen, peptides and so forth, it increases skin’s absorption of nourishing ingredients.
A good dermaroller is made of medical grade titanium needles that are so fine in diameter that they are nearly painless on the skin. To me it is very important as I don’t have an access to numbing creams nor I want to use them. Using such roller on a regular basis leads your skin to continuous regenerating process during which it gets thicker and the fine lines are reduced because of the newly produced collagen. So, in theory, this treatment is perfect for those with fine wrinkles, thinning skin (often aging skin), skin that has lost it’s elasticity and of course for reducing the appearance of old scars. Hence, intriguing for me as my skin suffers from all of the above. You can also use large size rollers with needle length of 2,0 mm and above to treat stretch marks and scars on your body.

The Derma Roller System removes stretch marks by stimulating the production of new collagen fibres and elastin in the skin. Producing more collagen and elastin in the skin fills in stretch marks as the skin thickens, tightens and elasticity is restored.
My experience
First of all I’d like to mention the packaging which is outstanding! The roller came in the plastic sealed tube(case) containing the roller. The roller is made of sturdy plastic and has a small wheel on it’s end with an extra protective plastic cap to ensure that needles won’t get damaged. Roller itself was sealed in another air tight pack what you would typically see in hospital with individually sealed off syringes. Overall a great idea for storing it safely not only from falling but away from my child as well. And of course you can easily take the container with you to your travels, that’s what the case is actually for.
I’ve used the roller only on my forehead area and on my cheeks and nose bridge three times a week or every other two days. I basically rolled it over the spots where I have a lot of texture, old scarring and pigmentation spots. Of course including the main 2 deep mimic wrinkles on my forehead (having these since i was 14 years old). The company advises to use the roller every day or at least 5 x week. I do think that with such frequent use you do see results faster than with less frequent use. I choose to do the dermarolling less frequently because my skin was getting very red during the day with a more frequent use. Before each use it is necessary to sanitize the roller. I’ve used the regular 96% alcohol solution for it. After staying in the alcohol solution for 2 minutes I’ve let the roller air dry before the use.
The total application time was 5 minutes on my face. It is advised to roll the derma roller in various directions which i ended up doing. You can start with vertical strokes and continue with horizontal or diagonal strokes. I’ve chosen to do only vertical and horizontal directions during the first use. Afterwards, the more I got used to the rolling, more directions I did at the time. Since I was not using any numbing cream on my face, it was very funky first time experience. You would expect a lot of pain but that was not the case. I felt some slight stinging and my skin was warming up but in terms of pain it was a 2 on the scale of 10. What I didn’t expect was the sound! Each time needles have penetrated my skin it made a popping sound. Like someone would pop some bubble wrap in the room next door. Except it is on your face, very strange experience but also fun.
I did see first results after 2 weeks of use. My skin was more firm to the touch and had less texture to it, especially around my nose area. My pores were definitely getting smaller. After 4 weeks I’ve seen the full effects. Skin texture was entirely gone and my thin skin felt so firm and thick as in my teenage years. The wrinkles on my forehead were diminished but not vanished. Instead they looked and felt less deep. I am pleased with the results and would recommend it for people who are battling with naughty skin. It is definitely a great helper for anyone who show signs of aging. I would recommend using the roller in the evening as your skin will recover overnight. You can also try investing into good peptide creams or serums to nourish your skin from within after dermarolling. I liked the collagen cream which came with the set and the sheet mask was good too. I will make a separate post about the mask later this month as I want to keep it a separate topic of discussion. Below you can take a peek at the ingredients lists of both products and a brief description of each.
